Most small businesses pay around 2.5 to 3.5 percent all-in, once every fee is counted. The range is wide because it depends on your pricing model, card mix, and average sale size. Treat any single “average” as directional.
How the two rails work: Interac and card fees in Canada.
Passing card fees to customers through a surcharge or a cash discount has limits in Canada: surcharges are capped, aren’t permitted in Quebec, and can never be applied to Interac debit. Before counting on one to zero out your “average”, make sure it fits your province and your card mix.
Averages are a gut check. They don’t pay your bills. Our pricing starts with interchange-plus, with Interac priced as Interac. Send us one statement and we’ll tell you exactly where you sit and whether there’s room to do better.
