Can you surcharge in your province?

Pick your province for general guidance on surcharging and dual pricing in Canada. This is an overview, not legal advice. We confirm the current rules for your exact setup before configuring anything.

General guidance, not legal advice. Surcharging applies to credit cards only and is capped at 2.4 percent. It is never allowed on Interac debit, and not permitted in Quebec. Dual pricing may be an option where surcharging is restricted. We confirm the current rules before setting anything up.

The rules that apply across the country

Wherever surcharging is permitted, these come with it.

On surcharging credit cards

✓Capped at 2.4 percent, or your cost of acceptance, whichever is lower.
✓Credit cards only. Never on Interac debit.
✓Advance notice to the card networks and your acquirer.
✓Clear signage at the entrance and till, and a separate line on the receipt.

Dual pricing and the Code of Conduct

✓Dual pricing shows a cash or debit price and a credit price side by side.
✓Often the cleaner option, and an alternative in Quebec.
✓The Code of Conduct protects your right to clear pricing.
✓We configure the signage and receipts correctly.
