Chargeback protection that fights for you

A chargeback costs you the sale, a fee, and your standing with the card brands. We help you stop many before they happen, fight the unfair ones, and keep your dispute rate low, in English or French, with a real person in your corner. Here is how it works, including how Interac is different.

Three layers of protection

Chargebacks are part of taking cards. The goal is to stop most, win the unfair ones, and keep your rate safe. We help on all three.

Prevent

Stop them before they start

Fraud screening, AVS and CVV checks, clear billing descriptors, and good receipts head off the disputes that never needed to happen.

Catch early

Resolve it before it becomes a chargeback

Where alert programs are available on your setup, you can hear about a dispute early and resolve it, before it turns into a formal chargeback and a fee.

Fight

Win the ones that aren’t fair

When a dispute isn’t right, we help you build the evidence and submit a strong, on-time response, so a winnable case isn’t lost on a deadline.

Chargebacks: a dispute, panel by panel Five storyboard panels from the business owner's side. One, you make a sale at the terminal, with prevention habits in place. Two, the customer calls their own bank to dispute it instead of asking you for a refund. Three, your phone buzzes with an early dispute alert, where available on your setup. Four, you fix it with a refund on your terms, or fight it with evidence by the deadline, with our help. Five, fixed early means no chargeback and no fee; fought means the funds were pulled back with a chargeback fee and the card brand decides. Deadlines, fees and rulings are set by the card brands. What a chargeback actually is

A chargeback happens when a customer disputes a charge with their own bank instead of asking you for a refund. The bank pulls the money back out of your account while the dispute is reviewed. It isn’t the same as a refund you choose to give, and it is more expensive.

A single disputed sale can cost you three ways: the amount of the sale, a chargeback fee added by the card networks, and often the product or service you already delivered. Too many disputes raise your chargeback ratio, which can put your whole account at risk.

Interac works differently

Most chargeback risk in Canada comes from Visa and Mastercard credit transactions, especially online and keyed sales. Interac debit uses its own dispute process and generally produces fewer disputes, because the payment is authorized and the funds move at the time of sale. So the prevention habits below matter most on your credit-card volume.

Why chargebacks happen

Most fall into four buckets. Knowing which is which tells you how to stop them.

True fraud

A stolen or counterfeit card is used and the real cardholder disputes it. Fraud screening, AVS, and CVV checks stop most of this before it happens.

Friendly fraud

A real customer disputes a purchase they actually made, often because they didn’t recognize the name on their statement or forgot a subscription. The most common type, and very preventable.

Confusion

An unclear billing descriptor, a surprise renewal, or a charge the customer can’t place. They call the bank instead of you.

Service disputes

Item not received, not as described, or arrived late. Clear policies, tracking, and fast replies head most of these off.

How to prevent most of them

The majority of chargebacks are preventable with a few habits:

  • Use a clear billing descriptor. Your business name on the customer's statement should be one they instantly recognize. This alone prevents a lot of friendly fraud.
  • Keep proof. Itemized receipts, delivery or pickup confirmation, signatures, and a record of any conversations.
  • Screen for fraud. Turn on AVS and CVV checks and use the fraud tools in your setup, especially for online and keyed transactions.
  • Make refunds easy and answer fast. A customer who can reach you’ll ask for a refund instead of calling the bank.
  • Remind subscribers before you bill. A quick heads-up before a recurring charge stops the "what is this?" dispute.

When you do get one, fight it the right way

If a chargeback isn’t fair, you can respond. It is called representment: you submit evidence that the charge was valid. The keys are simple but strict, you must meet the deadline and include the right proof.

We help you build that response, gather the evidence, and submit it on time, in English or French, so a winnable dispute doesn’t get lost on a technicality.

Chargeback questions, answered plainly

What is a chargeback fee?
When a customer disputes a charge with their bank, the card networks add a chargeback fee on top of the amount being pulled back. So a disputed sale can cost you the sale amount, the fee, and often the product or service you already delivered. We lay out the fee in your setup before you sign.
Do Interac debit payments get chargebacks?
Interac debit uses its own dispute process, which is different from credit-card chargebacks and generally results in fewer disputes, because the payment is authorized and funds move at the time of sale. Most chargeback risk for businesses comes from Visa and Mastercard credit transactions, especially online and keyed sales.
What is friendly fraud?
It is when a real customer disputes a purchase they actually made, sometimes because they forgot a subscription, didn’t recognize the billing name on their statement, or changed their mind. A clear billing descriptor and good receipts prevent a lot of it.
Can I win a chargeback?
Often, yes, if you respond on time with the right evidence: receipts, delivery confirmation, signed authorizations, and communication records. The card brands make the final decision, so there is no guarantee, but a strong, on-time response improves your odds, and we help you put it together.
Does AllProPay handle chargebacks for me?
We help. You get tools to screen for fraud, alerts where available, help preparing your dispute response, and a real person to walk you through it, in English or French, plus monitoring so your ratio stays healthy. The card brands make the final ruling, so we don’t promise wins, but you aren’t doing it alone.
