Statements are built to be hard to read. That isn’t your fault. Grab yours and follow the six steps below.

Most statements open with a summary, sometimes called “activity”. Write down three numbers for the month:
The deposits section shows what actually reached your bank. You don’t need it for the math.
Total fees divided by total card sales, times 100. That’s the percentage you actually pay on every dollar, once every fee is counted.
This one number tells you more than any advertised rate. The advertised rate is what they want you to look at. The effective rate is what you pay.
Skip to “fees and charges”. That’s where the cost hides. Some setups also show an interchange detail section: the card-brand cost by card type.
How the two compare: Interac and card fees in Canada.
These are the lines worth knowing on any statement, ours or anyone else’s:
Send us one recent statement. We’ll go over it with you line by line, name every fee, and show you where it could come down. It’s free, with no pressure either way. If the savings are there, we’ll show you. If they aren’t, we’ll tell you that too.
