From Portland and Lewiston to Bangor, Augusta and the coast, Maine bans card surcharges outright and protects card tips completely. You can still lower your card costs the right way. We show you exactly what you pay and how. No contracts, no cancellation fees.
Maine law (9-A M.R.S. 8-509) bars a seller from adding a surcharge for paying with a credit card or a debit card. Only government entities may surcharge, under cost-based limits.
Offering a lower price for paying cash is allowed. That is the compliant way to recover card costs in Maine: the regular price is what a card customer pays, and cash customers get a discount.
Under 26 M.R.S. 664(2), an employer may not deduct anything from tips charged to a credit card, including card processing fees, and must pay card tips by the next regular payday. Maine's all-in pricing law covers only short-term lodging and tickets, so it does not change how most businesses show card prices.
We set up Dual Pricing as a true cash discount for Maine, so no fee is ever added to a card or debit payment, and card tips pay out in full by the next payday.
Check any state in our surcharge checker. Rules change, so we confirm the current position before configuring anything. This is general information, not legal advice.
Send one recent statement for a free statement review. We find your true effective rate, name every fee, and show where it can come down. Savings are estimates based on your own statement.
The cash discount and the tip rule apply across these businesses.
