Credit card processing in Quebec

From Montreal to Quebec City, Laval to Gatineau, Quebec businesses are often quietly overpaying to accept cards, and many are paying credit-card rates on Interac without knowing it. We show you exactly what you pay and what each fee is for, in English or French, and help you lower it. No contracts, no cancellation fees.

What Quebec businesses actually pay

Most businesses don’t overpay because they made a bad choice. They overpay because the statement is built to be hard to read. In Quebec there is an extra trap: Interac debit, which should cost far less than credit, is often billed at a credit-card rate by flat-rate apps. We translate your statement into one honest number, your effective rate, and check that Interac is priced like Interac.

One $50 Interac tap, two bills: $0.80 billed like a credit card vs $0.05 billed as Interac Two receipts for the same $50 CAD Interac debit tap. Billed like a credit card at 1.5% plus $0.05, the fee is $0.75 plus $0.05, which is $0.80. Billed as Interac, there is no percentage, just one flat fee of about $0.05. A side card shows the gap: $0.80 vs $0.05 on the same tap, 16 times more. Example amounts, illustration, not a quote. ONE $50 INTERAC TAP Same customer, same bank card, same $50. Interac is not a credit card, and should not be priced like one. CREDIT-CARD PRICING Billed like credit A percentage plus a per-tap fee Sale $50.00 CAD Card Interac debit, tapped Billed at 1.5% + $0.05 1.5% of $50 $0.75 Per-tap fee $0.05 FEE ON THIS TAP $0.80 PRICED AS INTERAC Billed as Interac One flat fee per tap Sale $50.00 CAD Card Interac debit, tapped Billed at A flat fee per tap Percentage None Per-tap fee $0.05 FEE ON THIS TAP $0.05 THE GAP On the same tap $0.80 vs $0.05 Billed like credit $0.80 Billed as Interac $0.05 16 times more when a debit tap is billed like a credit card. The more debit-heavy your business, the more it costs you. LEGEND Billed as Interac: one flat fee Debit billed like credit: the avoidable cost Example amounts, illustration, not a quote. Interac fees are set per transaction; your rate depends on your setup.

Surcharging in Quebec

Unlike most of Canada, Quebec doesn’t permit credit card surcharging. Quebec's consumer protection law effectively prohibits charging more than the posted price, so the surcharge route that works in other provinces is off the table here. That is fine, because the bigger win for most Quebec merchants is transparent interchange-plus pricing and making sure Interac is priced correctly. This is general information, not legal advice. See our surcharge checker for the province-by-province picture.

Quebec sales recording (WEB-SRM and MEV)

If you run a restaurant or bar in Quebec, you must record your sales the way Revenu Quebec requires, through a sales recording module (MEV) or the newer cloud-based WEB-SRM. We set up your payments, your Interac, and a point of sale that meets the rules, together. Read the Quebec WEB-SRM guide. We don’t provide tax advice; confirm your obligation with Revenu Quebec.

How we help you lower it
